Solomons Island Heritage Tours - Patuxent River Seafood - Bay Glassed

Because our commercial fishing activities follow seasons and regulations, our daily activities vary. Our four vessels are Coast Guard licensed for a maximum of 6 passengers each. We keep our cost low by running tours during our regular commercial working day. The advantage is there is no script and no two trips are the same!

Crew for a Day

Picture
Come along with us as we chase the Bay's bounty. We will show you the gear types and techniques we use to make a living on the Chesapeake Bay such as bait pots, trot lines, crab pots, oyster dredges, and eel pots. Sit back and observe or get involved--it's up to you! Because children are adventurous and willingly to get dirty, we gladly welcome them aboard. Kids are encouraged to participate in every aspect of the trip.
Have a pup? Bring them too! We will do our best to make any accessibility accommodations.

Lighting Our Way

Picture
Drum Point, Cove Point, Cedar Point and Hooper’s Island lighthouses were responsible for guiding mariners into the safe waters of Solomons Harbor. Join us on a round trip tour. First we will view the Drum Point Lighthouse at its new location in the Solomons Harbor. As we leave the harbor and Patuxent River, we will follow the Calvert County shoreline to the beautiful Cove Point Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters. Crossing the Bay, we will view the Hooper's Island Light, only seen from the water. On our return trip, we will see the remnants of Cedar Point Light.
Depending on the weather and amount of time you can devote, we can also visit Point No Point Lighthouse, only seen by water, and Point Lookout Lighthouse at the Southern tip of Maryland.

$125 per hour,  2-4 hours suggested. Includes up to 6 people.
*Fuel surcharge may apply. See lighthouse distance chart below.

Dockside Demo

Picture
If you have a larger group, we can bring the Waterman for a Day excursion dockside! We will bring the Roughwater or Snatch Block and assorted commercial gear to any local venue to provide larger groups and organizations an opportunity to explore the commercial fishing industry. Visitors can have an opportunity to tour the boat and see a wide array of traditional gear such as shaft tongs, crab pots, and fish pots. The presentation will also include touch tanks where visitors can learn about crabs, fish, and oysters. A highlight for many is the opportunity to see a soft crab "in the making"!

War of 1812 to St. Leonard Creek

Picture
The largest naval engagement in the history of Maryland took place where the Patuxent River meets the mouth of St. Leonard Creek. After engaging the British at Cedar Point in June of 1814, Commodore Joshua Barney sailed his flotilla up the Patuxent and into the friendly waters of St. Leonard Creek. Here, the flotilla was supported by ground militia. After engaging the British at the mouth of St. Leonard Creek on June 8th and then again on the 26th, Barney slipped out of the creek and further up the Patuxent.
Leaving Solomons Island Harbor, we will make the 5 mile  trip up the Patuxent to St. Leonard Creek. We will explore the waters of the creek "recreating" the battle and reflecting on how the area has changed since 1814.

$125 per hour,  3-4 hours suggested. Includes up to 6 people. Fuel surcharge may apply.

Crab Steam

Picture
Want to eat the crabs caught onboard the Roughwater or Snatch Block? Back at the dock we will share our seasoning recipes and the techniques to pickin' crabs. You will have a chance t0 fill the pot, season the crabs, and set the timer. It doesn't get any fresher than this!
